Alta Costura

Posted on 2 marzo, 2019

¡Ciao mondo!

Fashion has many fields, from those to cover social needs, to those that go much further: art.
The designs and tailoring of haute couture is the most sophisticated part of fashion, and that, unfortunately, falls into oblivion before a more consumerist and fast fashion world, because haute couture is of great exclusivity that only remains open to a few in the world. But we should not ignore it, because it is a very laborious, expensive and creative work.

¿Qué es la Alta Costura?//What is Haute Couture?

In short, this would involve the manufacture of clothing outside the processes of the textile industry. A garment will be haute couture when it is made by hand in all aspects of tailoring: design, finishes, choice of fabrics and sewing.
It has its origin in the authentic capital of fashion design: Paris. In the 19th century, the first designers were born, and it was at this moment when they saw that their creations were artistic and decided to create their own firm. In haute couture there is no couturier or seamstress, but there is an authentic creator, because it is not only the confection, but also its artistic version
.
Haute couture professionals are fashion designers who create a garment from a client’s order. The dress is made in a specialized workshop, where the client is subjected to a series of tests: anatomical measures, combination of colors or preparation of sketches depending on their physique. The final result of the garment must bring together several aspects: the aesthetic value of the garment, the personal style of the client and the place where the garment is going to be worn.
Fashion houses specializing in haute couture pay special attention to high quality fabrics and are aimed at customers with high purchasing power, as they are exclusive dresses.

¿Qué marcas producen Alta Costura?//What brands produce Haute Couture?

Its clientele has a high purchasing power and belongs to a very small socioeconomic segment, as it is estimated that there are less than two thousand customers in the world for all Haute Couture houses. Therefore, most firms not only make these products, but diversify into other categories, such as ready-to-wear. In fact, if the firms were dedicated exclusively to haute couture, they would not have economic viability, which is why it is said that this art would have disappeared at the end of the 80s, if they did not diversify or be acquired by conglomerates such as LVMH.

Without a doubt, one of the most emblematic houses in the world, and my favouritism, Chanel and the collections of Karl Lagerfeld, a designer who innovated and revived this firm. On their website you can see a brief explanation of how they make haute couture, in addition to the fashion show (and latest collection of Lagerfeld).
